Unlocking the unsustainable rice-wheat system of Indian Punjab: Assessing alternatives to crop-residue burning from a systems perspective

چکیده

Crop residue burning in Indian Punjab emits particulate matter with detrimental impacts on health, climate and that threaten agricultural production. Though legal technological barriers to exist – alternatives considered more profitable farmers continues. We review black carbon (BC) emissions from Punjab, analyse social-ecological processes driving burning, rice wheat value-chains. Our aims are a) understand system feedbacks practices Punjab; b) identify systemic effects of c) companies financial actors investing production Punjab. find locking the into crop burning. The Government India has greatest leverage risk current system. Corporate stakeholders have little incentive enact change, but sufficient stakes value chains influence change. Agricultural policy changes necessary reduce harmful practices, insufficient bringing about sustainability. Transformative will require diversification, circular business models green financing. Intermediating institutions setting sustainability conditions loans could these changes. Sustainability requires systems perspective we provide, reconnect demand supporting environmental conditions.

Effect of crop residue and nitrogen levels in yield and yield attributing traits of rice under Rice-Wheat Cropping System

A 3- years (2015, 2016 and 2017) field study was carried out at National Wheat Research Program, Bhirahawa, Rupandehi, Nepal to evaluate the influence of crop residues and nitrogen levels on rice. The experiment was conducted in split plot design with three replications. Main plots were two crop residue levels (with crop residues of 30 cm wheat stubble and without crop residues) and sub plots c...

Manuring and residue management effects on physical properties of a soil under the riceヨwheat system in Punjab, India

Sustainability of the rice–wheat rotation is important to Asia’s food security. Intensive cropping with no return of crop residues and other organic materials results in loss of soil organic matter and is not sustainable. We evaluated effect of eight treatments comprised of various combinations of green manure (GM), wheat straw (WS), rice straw (RS), farmyard manure (FYM) and urea alone (contro...
